Van Malone, a former college and NFL defensive back, enters his seventh season coaching cornerbacks at Kansas State in 2025, while also serving his sixth year as assistant head coach and defensive passing game coordinator. Under his leadership, K-State’s defense has ranked among the best in the nation, allowing just 21.8 points per game over the last four seasons. His coaching has produced seven All-Big 12 cornerbacks, while his units have helped the Wildcats force 62 turnovers from 2022 to 2024, leading the Big 12 in interceptions during that span. In 2024, his defense ranked fourth nationally in fourth-down defense (32.1%) and held opponents to just 118.7 rushing yards per game, K-State’s best mark since 2007.

Malone’s impact has extended beyond team success, as he has developed standout players like Jacob Parrish, who earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors before declaring for the NFL Draft. His work in 2023 helped K-State rank in the top 30 nationally in eight defensive categories, including 11th in third-down defense and 16th in fumbles recovered. He was recognized as the 2023 Big 12 Cornerbacks Coach of the Year by Our Coaching Network, reinforcing his reputation as a top-tier developer of defensive talent. Additionally, Malone has been an active advocate for the National Marrow Donor Program, earning recognition for his contributions to the cause.

Before joining K-State, Malone built an impressive coaching résumé, serving as defensive coordinator at SMU and coaching at Oklahoma State, Tulsa, Texas A&M, and other programs. His ability to generate turnovers and develop defensive backs was evident at every stop, with multiple players earning all-conference honors and several reaching the NFL. A former second-round pick by the Detroit Lions, Malone enjoyed a successful playing career, earning Pro Bowl nominations for his special teams play. His post-playing career has included media roles, nonprofit leadership, and high school coaching, making him a well-rounded figure in the football community.
